The UNESCO Award of Excellence for Handicrafts aims to encourage artisans to produce handicrafts using traditional skills, patterns and themes in an innovative way, in order to ensure the continuity and sustainability of these traditions and skills. Now in its 9th year, the Award of Excellence program exists in Southeast, Central, South and East Asia, Western Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and will be extended to other sub-regions. This program supports craft producers in improving their product design and marketing techniques. Through providing training and support services, the program aims to help strengthen sustainable livelihoods. Another guiding principle of the Award of Excellence program is to encourage the linking of traditional skills with innovation so that handicrafts remain relevant, valuable and marketable in today’s changing world.
